Watch the Video Tutorial

This week, Moda Lissa walks you through the step-by-step process of constructing the Sunday Best block. The video is embedded right in this post, so make sure to watch it for visual guidance and some great tips!

Start with the Pattern

Before you dive in, make sure to download the pattern and either print it out or have it pulled up on your device. It includes cutting instructions, assembly diagrams, and a handy coloring sheet to plan your fabric choices.

Block Construction Overview

The Sunday Best block is wonderfully beginner-friendly—it’s composed of just two main units:

  • Flying geese (made using the 4-at-a-time method)
  • Four-patch units and squares

Lissa starts by demonstrating the flying geese method. You'll begin with one large square and four smaller ones. After layering, drawing a diagonal line, and sewing a quarter inch on both sides, you’ll cut down the middle and repeat the process to end up with four flying geese units

Pro tip: Don’t feel like getting up to press every time? Lissa shares that a wooden finger presser is a great time-saving tool when you’re working at your sewing table.

If you need help with squaring up your flying geese, don’t worry—there’s a link in the video description to an extra tutorial for that step.

Layout & Assembly Tips

Once you’ve made your units, you’ll lay out your pieces to see the block come together. The block is assembled in three rows, starting with your four-patch and flying geese units, then joining them all together.

There are coloring variations included with the pattern, and Lissa shows a few in the video. You can go for a two-color version or mix it up with a scrappy look. Either way, it’s a block that really shines when repeated, creating a beautiful secondary design.

A Handy Tip from Lissa

If you’re someone who likes to stay extra organized, try color-coding your fabric cuts before you sew. Lissa shares that this helped her keep track of the pieces, especially when switching between color variations.

Final Thoughts

Block 3 may be one of the easier blocks in the Blockheads 6 lineup, but it’s a great one to make over and over again—ideal for a larger quilt with repeating units.

A big thank you to Anne Sutton for designing such a charming block for us! Don’t forget to share your Sunday Best block in the Blockheads Facebook group. We love seeing your progress, your fabric choices, and your unique interpretations.

See you next week for Block 4!
